etting up for Multiplayer.
Overview
SowGB is like any other multiplayer PC game. It uses a client server model. Who ever starts the game is the server and everyone else is a client. If the server is behind a router, then the server must map a port from their router to the computer that they are playing on. Most people connected to the internet from home are behind a router, so if you plan to host any games, you will have to learn how to map a port on your specific router.
Your router has an address on the internet, your computer only has an address in your home, this is your local lan. Your computer’s ip address probably starts with something like 192.168, this address is never an internet address and is reserved for lans. The concept of mapping a port is so your router knows where to send the packets (little bits of information from the internet).
To connect to a program running on another computer on the internet, you need the ip address and the port. 144.44.432.222 is an ip address, and here it’s followed by the port, 144.44.432.222:31791, both are needed. The ip address is your router’s unique address on the internet, the port tells which program gets the packets. Since your computer is connected to the router, the router needs to know what to do with the packets it receives on that port. So you need to map the port, or port forwarding. So that when the router receives packets on that port, like people trying to connect to your game, it knows to send them to your computer. So that when packets are received on 144.44.432.222:31791 -> 192.168.1.4:31791, the router forwards the packets to your computer. All this is done through the router setup and each router is different. So you need to go to where you have your router and write down the brand and model number. Btw – once you do this, you do not have to do it again.
Setting Up.
To host a game, you need to open a specific port in any firewalls and in any routers that you may have. You will need to do this only once (if you get it right). There are a number of companies that make firewall software and many makes and models of routers. In addition people can be quite creative in ways they can patch things together. Therefore we cannot give specific directions on how to do this in all circumstances and combinations.
Routers – An excellent resource for correctly configuring your router is:
http://portforward.com/ . Navigate to that website and click on the specific model of your router. Click on Default Guide and follow the directions. The specific values you will need to enter at some point are:
The specific port to be opened is: 31791.
The protocol type is: udp.
Firewalls – Depending on the specific type of firewall software you have installed, you probably will need to open a port in the firewall as well. The guides for this are at:
http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... rindex.htm
Select the firewall program for your system and follow the directions.
IP Address – You will need to know the IP address of your computer to host a game. You can find this at this website:
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and click on My IP on the toolbar. Write this number down where you can find it.
Hosting a Game – Make sure that you have opened the correct port in both your firewall and in your router before continuing. See the section above for pointers on how to do this.
In the multiplayer screen, enter 31791 in the Server Port box. You do not need to enter a value in the Server IP address window to host.
You will need to enter a value in the Player Name box and in the Handicap box as well. Player Name can be any value you can enter from your keyboard up to 30 characters long. Handicap is the percent of historical regiment strengths you will get. A value of 100 gets you the historical value from the OOB file. Then click the Host button to start the next phase. You will need to tell the other players who will be joining your battle the IP number of your computer.
